Pict Oregon Coast Culinary InstCoast Lines

While writing my story about taking a trip up the Rogue River, I was nicely transported from the rainy Oregon winter back to a sparkling fall day. I also read Zane Grey’s Rogue River Feud this winter, and that really took me deep into Rogue territory. I’d suggest reading it if you would like to learn more about what Gold Beach was like in the old days (quite different from the quiet town it is now) and if you want to get a real feel for the region. Grey, whose greatest passion was fishing, had a cabin way upriver on the Rogue. While the literary merits of his writing may be disputed, his descriptions of the river—and how it molds those who live there—bring the area into sharp focus.

In February, I made another trip down to the Oregon Coast Culinary Institute in Coos Bay. Chef Shawn Hamlin and Oregon Dungeness Crab Commission executive director Nick Furman got together to create the First Annual Oregon Dungeness Crab Challenge. Ten professional chefs and one amateur gathered at the Culinary Institute, where at 8 a.m., they were given five live crabs and two hours to complete a dish. Three judges from the American Culinary Federation offered commentary and suggestions on each dish, and the winner walked away with a check for $1,000. The best part? The public was invited to taste the dishes too. Don’t miss it next year, if you’re a crab lover!

In this issue, our staff enjoyed putting together a feature on Florence, where Oregon Coast is based. You’ll also find Barton Howe’s amusing story on a charter fishing trip out of Newport, a look at the Oregon Coast Trail after 20 years, and a story about Carol Anne Smith, a harpist who soothes both man and beast with her heavenly music.
Oregon Coast Quests are a great way to get the kids outdoors and involved with their surroundings. They focus on the natural world and contain maps and clues that point the way to a hidden Quest treasure box. See Julie Howard’s story for the details.

And now that summer is on its way, this area is coming alive with festivals, concerts, clambakes, and more. You can take your pick from a myriad of events, so keep your eye on our handy-dandy calendar and make the most of your time on the Coast.
