Newport presents a wonderful weekend of food and entertainment July 5 and 6, when this year’s Geezer Games take place in conjunction with the Nye Beach Clambake and Seafood Barbeque. For those of you unfamiliar with the Geezer Games, they are a series of sporting events held Saturday and Sunday exclusively for those 50 plus. The Newport Senior Activity Center sponsors the Geezer Games, and activities include tennis, track and field, swimming, Ping Pong, and maybe even a 3-on-3 basketball tournament if enough participants show interest. There will also be an open run for all ages.
The Nye Beach Clambake and Seafood Barbeque takes place on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the oceanfront parking lot on Beach Drive. Expect to see a children’s parade as well as arts and crafts booths. Picnic tables and chairs are available for those enjoying the seafood. Non-seafood items are also available.
The feasting culminates in a family-friendly dance at Don Davis Park lasting from 6 until 10 p.m. Local charities and schools benefit from the Nye Beach Clambake and Seafood Barbeque. So bring the entire family and plan for a great weekend following Independence Day. (541-265-9617; www.newportseniorcenter.com, www.nyebeach.org/home)
