The Siletz Bay Sand Castle Competition in the Taft District of Lincoln City, off of SW 51st Street, gets under way on August 11 at 1 p.m. Three hours is the time allotted for all participants to build their creations before judging, which begins at 4 p.m.
For participants, registration is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the dock on the day of the event. The fee is one can or more of food per entrant, which will be donated to the Lincoln City Food Bank. Team categories are children, teen, adult (19 and older), and family/group. Prizes are awarded for Best Mermaid, Best Chowderhead, and Best Traditional Sand Castle.
Entries must be built using only sand, water, shells, and other natural beach materials found on the beach that day. Hand tools may be used but not power tools. And children may receive limited advice from adults, but no physical assistance—unless they are all in the same family/group category.
Within hours after judging, the day’s hard work will be washed away by the incoming tide. So plan to see the mermaids, chowderheads, castles, and more before they disappear in the waves. (800-452-2151; www.taftbeach.com)
