Lumberjack Competition at the Mill

Topping a spar poleThe Mill Casino in North Bend hosts this year's 8th Lumberjack Competition on June 28, when world-class competitors will chop, hack, and attack any wood that gets in their way. The event typically features competitors from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the United States.

Traditional events include double buck, springboard chop, and underhand chop. Other events include Jack and Jill buck, stock saw, hot saw, obstacle pole, axe throw, women's underhand chop, tree topping, speed climbing, pole climbing, springboard chop, standing block chop, and single buck. The events are split into two shows, one beginning at 11:30 a.m. and the second beginning at 1:30 p.m. Spectator admission is free.

In order to compete, you must be a member of the American Lumberjack Association, and there's a $5 entry fee per event. The prize money totals $9,500 and is divided among the top six finishers. (541-672-0757;
