Do you remember a decade ago, when people talked about the high level of etiquette on the Internet? That was before e-mail spam and other unpleasant tactics. One of which is to hover over an expiring domain name and, when the owner neglects to renew it on time, register it for yourself and hold it for ransom.
Most recently, this trick has been played on the Caledonia House B&B in Seal Rock. Their old name has been taken and they rightfully don't intend to pay the steep price to get it back. Bev Cohen is lonelier than she should be. After years at the Lincoln City Chamber office, not easily accessible in a shopping center parking lot, she now greets visitors at the new Lincoln City Information Center. Located in the historic DeLake School that has become the venue for the Lincoln City Cultural Center, the new offices are easy to spot from the highway and offer easy parking.
For a while after it opened on May 1, the info center was one of Lincoln City’s best kept secrets. You had to drive right into the parking lot to find a sign that said you had come to the right place. By the time we go to press, the signage should be much improved. Stop in and pick up some literature, and check out some of the other occupants of this new-old facility. Look for an article about both the Cultural Center and the Information Center in this issue.

During the 20 years that Alicia and I have published this magazine, I've written a number of articles on real estate. At the very start in 1988, there were still some properties in Florence that had been on the market since the early part of the decade. This quickly changed and the upward curve of real estate sales and prices has been remarkably steady for the last couple decades. I'd like to credit our arrival on the coast for that, but in all modesty, it was probably other factors.
To the best of my recollection, the article in this issue is the first one I've "written" in a generally down market. Actually, I've hardly written it at all. It consists almost entirely of advertising, showcasing some of the bargains that have recently appeared.
As I talked to real estate professionals, I ran into a reasonable argument against our doing this at all. Certainly, there are properties that were listed at unrealistic prices. Certainly, some of these are now listed for less. But it's wrong to assume that any property that hasn't dropped its list price is overpriced.
Take condos, for example. In other parts of the country, condo prices have plunged. On the Oregon Coast, not so much - if at all. In the first place, some of these are in exceptional locations. Besides, as options for vacations or retirement without the hassle of maintenance, there are some strong reasons why condos should be in demand in years to come.
Nobody knows what the future will bring, but whether it's a detached home, full ownership in a condo or fractional ownership, think of your purchase in terms of the place you want to spend time. If you love the property,and you can afford the cost, you’re not going to go far wrong.

First a disclaimer. Both of these are advertisers, so I may be prejudiced.
There is no Oscar at Super Oscar's restaurant in Newport, but Edgar and Cindy, the husband and wife team who run the place along with Edgar's father, seem pretty super to me. It's open seven days a week, 24 hours a day, and almost every time I stop in, they are there. Cindy is attending community college classes. They must not sleep. Oscar's offers authentic Mexican food at reasonable prices and, if you’re 55 and older, you get a free soft drink or a cup of coffee with the meal. I think us old people don't always get the respect we deserve and I appreciate this gesture.
The Pancake Mill, right on Hwy 101 near the Coos Bay/North Bend line, may surprise you. It surprised a trio of young people from Portland, who were bemoaning the fact that places like this didn't have chai tea latte, only to discover that the Pancake Mill has chai tea latte on the menu. You can also get muesli, a Swiss concoction involving fruit and oatmeal that my sister introduced me to as part of a 4-H project. They only do breakfast and lunch. I'm thinking of starting a petition to ask them to do dinner.
